I had planned to make this Hot Chocolate Mix to send with my gift packages. I made a small batch to test, but I didn’t have the time to package it and send it out as gifts. It’s delicious, so it’s on my agenda for next year.
If it’s unseasonably warm where you are like it is where I am (it reached 70 in St. Louis today!), you probably won’t be in the mood for hot chocolate. But once it cools down again, as it always does in January, you’ll want this hot chocolate.
To make this, I used the 500 gram Pound Plus Chocolate bars from Trader Joe’s, as well as their brand of cocoa powder; both are tasty. If you have access to a Trader Joe’s, I think those are also the most economical buys for chocolate and cocoa powder (although I could be wrong about the latter). This hot chocolate will only be as good as the chocolate you put in it, so be picky with what you use.
I quartered the batch to make a sample. According to the recipe, it should make 6 servings. Here’s my quartered quantities (and weights, because I used the weights from the recipe since I broke chocolate off the bars).
This is delicious hot chocolate. It’s like drinking a candy bar. I’ve said before that Alton Brown’s hot cocoa mix is an everyday hot cocoa mix, easy to drink on a regular basis. This hot chocolate mix is also easy to drink, but it’s a sipping chocolate. It’s a dessert, definitely a treat. I like my hot chocolate to be dark, and this is a nice balance between rich chocolate and sweet chocolate. This would be much sweeter if you switched the ratio of dark to milk chocolate, or if you added some white chocolate.
I really enjoyed this hot chocolate mix. It’s easy to make, and would make a great gift. It’s also a flexible recipe, open to customization with different chocolates; Alex wants me to add some orange-flavored chocolate to my next batch. I’ll definitely make this recipe again.

- ½ cup granulated sugar (3.5 oz)
- ½ tsp vanilla
- ½ cup + 2 tbsp semi-sweet chocolate (3.15 oz)
- 3 tbsp milk chocolate (1 oz)
- ¼ cup cocoa powder (.75 oz)
- Use a food processor to combine the first two ingredients, then add chocolates, then cocoa. A blender will run hot, melting the chocolate and make a mess of things. I tried a little food chopper (like a mini-food processor), and that didn't work as well as I would have liked. The chocolate was still coarse and didn't melt in milk as well as I would have liked. I don't have a food processor, but when I visited my parents, I used theirs to pulse the rest of the hot chocolate mix into a nice, fine powder.
- To make: combine ¼ cup mix with 1 cup milk (8 ounces). The chocolate melts best if you combine it with milk and heat it on the stove. Be prepared for lots of stirring if you just try adding hot milk to the chocolate. Microwaving the chocolate and milk together is an option, but you'll still want to stir a lot, and don't microwave too much at once unless you want the milk to scald.
